The secret to a great smile includes always taking the time to ensure that any oral health treatments are well taken care of. If you have orthodontic braces, they must always be cared for to ensure they can continue doing their job safely and effectively.

For example, if you have braces, you must make sure to keep them safe from oral accidents at all times, just as you would normally do. This includes using any safety equipment if your teeth or mouth are at risk for injury, including during contact sports, on the job physical labor, and other high-risk activities.

Food restrictions may have to be put in place for individuals with braces. Many sticky or chewy foods can be extremely difficult to clean or can potentially damage the equipment. In addition, it increases your risk for tooth decay if food particles become trapped around your teeth.

If you do suffer an oral emergency caused by a broken piece of wire or bracket on your braces, do not attempt to fix it. Trying to fix a damaged set of braces could worsen the situation or damage your teeth and gums. If a wire is broken off, do not try to cut it off as it can become a choking hazard. Instead, cover it with a piece of wax or other approved device, and seek out the assistance of your orthodontist at Kirby Nelson Orthodontics.
