Regular Adjustment Sessions Are a Critical Part of the Alignment Process

Posted .

The metal brackets, wires and other assorted hardware on your braces are just the physical elements of the process needed to realign your teeth. In reality, it is the progressive yet modest tension applied to your braces and teeth that stretch the periodontal ligaments that hold each tooth in its socket. If you miss an adjustment session or if you reschedule it with significantly delay, it could potentially increase the total duration of the alignment process.

At the same time, our Kirby Nelson Orthodontics team understand that life has its own little complications. Illnesses, family matters and special events can sometimes get in the way of you keeping your adjustment session appointment.

If you know you have something coming up that will keep you from your next adjustment session, please call our orthodontic office at 425-888-1896 to reschedule. As a general rule of thumb, your orthodontist, Dr. Kirby Nelson, tries to schedule adjustment sessions four to six weeks in advance. Not only does this give you ample time to reschedule an appointment, but it is also the usual window of time that your periodontal ligaments need to accept their new position.

Of course the adjustment appointment is about more than applying new tension to your teeth. It’s also a good opportunity to replace any hardware or spacers that have suffered some wear and tear. Good oral hygiene is also important for the alignment process. You should feel free to ask your Kirby Nelson Orthodontics orthodontist any questions about how to best clean any hard-to-reach places.

If you’re contemplating having braces in North Bend, Washington, or if you’re overdue for your next adjustment appointment, you should call Kirby Nelson Orthodontics at 425-888-1896 to talk to our orthodontic team.
