The Guidelines of Brushing While You Have Braces

Posted .

Taking care of braces can be very tedious and tiresome, especially while brushing your teeth, but we are here to help make brushing and oral hygiene much easier for you!

Brushing and oral hygiene are very important when you have braces. If you refuse to take care of your smile throughout your treatment, the food particles and plaque can damage your smile, creating tooth decay and gum disease. So, please clean your teeth and braces at least twice a day by doing the following:

Prepare to brush: Take off elastics and any other removable section of the appliance so it doesn’t get in the way.

Clean your braces: Use your brush and clean the brackets, wires, and pins of your appliance. Make sure all of the plaque and debris are scraped away as you clean.

Brush your teeth: Focus on cleaning each individual tooth by scrubbing the top, bottom, and inner sections of the tooth. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and first scrub the section of tooth that lies between your wire and gums. Use a circular motion while you do so. Then repeat this process with every section of the tooth as well as with the additional teeth in your smile.

We also ask you to care for your braces by flossing and rinsing at least once a day. Flossing is a very beneficial task that deeply cleans the spaces between your teeth, which can help prevent major dental issues. Rinsing is also beneficial because it nourishes and strengthens your smile each day, which can also help with tooth decay and gum disease. Just simply rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash, bacteria-killing mouthwash, or anti-gingivitis mouthwash for 30-40 seconds a day, or however long the mouthwash label suggests.
