Why You May Need a Hawley Retainer

Posted .

Did you know that your mouth will require a retainer once your braces are removed? Why is that, exactly?

Well, as you may know, your braces are designed to correct the alignment of your teeth. Once they come, off, however, your teeth will still have some leftover tension hanging around in your dental sockets, which if left unchecked, can cause your teeth to drift out of position once again, partially or even fully reversing the initial orthodontic work.

A retainer will prevent this from happening. There are several different types of retainers. The most common removable type is known as a Hawley.

This is an apparatus made of acrylic connected to special interlocking wires that hold your teeth in position for a time. It is removable and should be worn at the times that Drs. Kirby Nelson recommends. These times may change over time, depending on the progress seen during routine checkups. If it is damaged or you don’t wear it during the prescribed times, you’ll need it for a longer period of time.

If you are ready have your braces removed at Kirby Nelson Orthodontics in North Bend, Washington clinic and you have a question about your upcoming retainer, you can call 425-888-1896 for more information.
